Urotropin 500 mg capsules are pharmaceutical preparations used primarily for the prevention of cystitis, reducing the frequency of catheter blockage, and for asymptomatic bacteriuria.

Pharmacological properties

  • Urotropin (hexamethylenetetramine, methenamine, hexamine) is a substance with antiseptic and disinfectant properties depending on the dose. It is a bacteriostatic that is active against most bacteria that cause urinary infections: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella aerogenes, Pseudomonas, etc. 
  • Due to its mechanism of action and chemical structure, urotropin does not determine bacterial resistance, so it can be administered in long-term treatments.Observation: The preparation is recommended as long-term maintenance treatment after antibiotic administration has ended.Upon doctor's advice, it can also be administered to children in specific personalized concentrations and pharmaceutical forms.

Warnings and precautions

The therapeutic approach must be individualized by the doctor, taking into account the severity and type of symptoms.

  • Please follow the administration recommended in the prescription!
  • Personalized treatments can be modified depending on your state of health and compliance with the treatment.
  • Do not use more product or more often than recommended.
  • This preparation was prescribed only for the current pathology.
  • Do not use it later for another condition without the doctor's consent.
  • It is recommended, during long-term treatments, a correct and complete communication with the doctor, in order to be able to change the dose according to the evolution of the disease.
  • It is administered orally, according to the doctor's instructions.
  • It is recommended to take the preparation at the same time every day.
  • If you missed a dose, do not take a double dose to compensate.
  • It is not recommended to take the preparation in case of sensitivity or allergy to the active substance.
  • Depending on the sensitivity of each patient and proportional to the dose and duration of treatment, the following may occur: digestive irritation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irritation and inflammation of the urinary tract, etc.
  • Please inform your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken other medications or compounded preparations, including those without a prescription, if you are undergoing other treatments or if you have suffered from other conditions such as kidney failure, gout or severe liver failure.
  • It is not recommended for use in Proteus infections, as it can hydrolyze urea and thus form ammonium hydroxide, thereby making the urine alkaline and preventing the appearance of active formaldehyde.
  • Concomitant administration with sulfonamides, antibiotics active in alkaline urine or alkalinizing agents, thiazide diuretics, antacid drugs/substances, sodium bicarbonate, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors is not recommended, as they may influence the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • The preparation contains gluten. In case of intolerance, you can request a gluten-free preparation.
  • The preparation does not contain lactose.
  • Keep out of the reach of children. 
  • Do not use the compounded preparation after the expiration date.
