Pharmacological properties

  • Carbamazepine treats seizures and symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia by inhibiting sodium channels.
  • In bipolar disorder, a clinically significant reduction in mania symptoms was found, according to the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS).
  • Carbamazepine has a narrow therapeutic index.

Warnings and precautions

The therapeutic approach must be individualized by the doctor, taking into account the severity and type of symptoms.

  • Do not use more product or more often than recommended.
  • This preparation was prescribed only for the current pathology.

  • It is recommended, during long-term treatments, a correct and complete communication with the doctor, in order to be able to change the dose according to the evolution of the disease.
  • It is not recommended to take the preparation in case of sensitivity or allergy to the active substance.
  • Do not use more or less than the dose prescribed by your doctor.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking other treatments or if you have other conditions such as liver, dermatological, cardiac, renal or interrupted treatments with carbamazepine in the past, etc.
  • Depending on the sensitivity of each person and the dose administered, mild skin reactions may occur. These disappear within a few days or weeks of treatment or after a decrease in the dose. If these symptoms persist or worsen, it is recommended to contact your doctor.
  • It is not recommended to stop taking the drug suddenly without consulting your doctor. Abrupt discontinuation may cause convulsions.
  • Switching from one antiepileptic drug to another is done according to the doctor's instructions.
  • Depending on individual sensitivity and correlated with the daily dose administered, treatment with carbamazepine may cause dizziness, drowsiness, hypotension, and confusion.
  • It is not recommended to consume grapefruit juice or herbal preparations containing St. John's wort, as they may influence the therapeutic effect of carbamazepine.
  • Inform your doctor about other medications or over-the-counter preparations you are taking, especially in the case of long-term treatments, because carbamazepine may modify their therapeutic action and vice versa. These may include: antihistamines (loratadine), cardiovascular drugs (diltiazem, verapamil), gastrointestinal drugs (omeprazole), antifungals (ketoconazole, fluconazole, itraconazole, etc.), other antiepileptic drugs (oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin), anthelmintics (albendazole), contraceptives (hormonal contraceptives), corticosteroids (prednisone, dexamethasone), preparations containing estrogens or progesterone, etc.
  • At the beginning of treatment with carbamazepine or if the patient is an elderly person, certain side effects may occur quite frequently. These may be dizziness, headache, fatigue, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, allergic skin reactions, blurred vision. For any other side effects, it is recommended to contact your doctor.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Do not use the compounded preparation after the expiration date.
