Atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis

- what we need to know -

Atopic dermatitis (or atopic eczema) is an increasingly common skin condition, both in children and adults. It manifests itself through episodes of inflammation and intense itching, which may recur periodically. It is not a contagious disease, but it can significantly affect the quality of life.

How do we know if we have atopic dermatitis?

Among the most common signs are:
  • dry, flaky skin
  • intense itching, especially at night
  • red spots or irritation, sometimes with small blisters
  • thickened or cracked skin areas, especially on the elbows, knees, neck or hands.
Symptoms may come and go. If you notice that itching and irritation persist for several days in a row, recur frequently or worsen in contact with triggering factors (detergents, dust, stress, temperature changes), it is time to consult a dermatologist.

Why does atopic dermatitis occur?

The exact causes are not fully known, but it is known that:

  • Is there a genetic predisposition (if one of the parents has eczema, allergies or asthma, the child is at higher risk)
  • the skin's natural barrier is more fragile, allowing water loss and irritants to penetrate
  • allergies, stress and environmental factors can trigger or worsen symptoms.

What can we do?

Atopic dermatitis does not have a "cure", but there are solutions to keep symptoms under control and reduce the frequency of attacks. The first step is to go to the doctor, who will recommend the right treatment, adapted to the severity of the condition.
On prescription, they can be prescribed creams or ointments, with a soothing, moisturizing or anti-inflammatory effect, prepared in a pharmacyThese customized formulas may contain:
  • emollients and moisturizing agents – urea in low concentrations, glycerin, lactic acid, ceramides, to restore the skin barrier
  • anti-inflammatory or antipruritic substances – hydrocortisone (low doses, topical), tacrolimus, pimecrolimus – for severe and short-term forms, zinc oxide, calamine
  • antiseptic or antimicrobial substances – chlorhexidine
  • other soothing and repairing ingredients – bisabolol, allantoin, panthenol.
The advantage of the master treatment is that it can be tailored exactly to the patient's needs - whether we are talking about a child with very sensitive skin or an adult with recurrent forms.
