Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, affecting the skin and genital mucosa. Although many infections are asymptomatic and transient, some can cause visible lesions or increase the risk of cervical dysplasia.
How does it manifest itself?
Clinical lesions include visible warts in the vulvar, vaginal, or perianal area,presenting as soft, pink or gray growths with a “cauliflower-like” appearance. In other cases, the infection may remain latent, with no visible symptoms, and may be detected only through specific testing. Local discomfort may include itching or a mild burning sensation.
Causes and Mechanism
HPV infects epithelial cells through micro-lesions in the mucosa. High-risk viral types can alter the cell cycle and predispose to pre-cancerous changes. The immune system influences how the infection progresses: an effective immune response can lead to viral clearance, while weakened immunity may promote persistence of the infection.
Compounded treatments
