Seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, which manifests itself as redness, scaling and itching, especially in areas where the sebaceous glands are more active. It is not a contagious disease, but it has a recurrent course and can affect the quality of life.
How does seborrheic dermatitis manifest?
Characteristic signs and symptoms include:
- red areas covered with yellowish-white scales, oily to the touch
- mild or moderate itching
- visible scaling on the scalp (persistent dandruff)
- injuries to the eyebrows, wings of the nose, ears or upper chest
Why does seborrheic dermatitis occur?
The exact cause is not fully known, but it is associated with several factors:
- hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands
- the presence of fungi of the genus Malassezia, which develops on skin rich in sebum
- genetic factors, stress, hormonal imbalances or associated conditions (e.g., Parkinson's disease, immunosuppression)
Therapeutic options
Treatment of seborrheic dermatitis aims to reduce inflammation, control scaling, and limit fungal proliferation.
Based on medical prescription, they can be recommended masterful preparations which may include:
- antifungal agents – ketoconazole, ciclopirox, zinc pyrithione, miconazole
- anti-inflammatory substances – hydrocortisone, clobetasol (low doses, applied locally, for a limited period), tacrolimus
- keratolytic agents and emollients – salicylic acid, urea, glycerin, to reduce scales and restore the skin barrier, resorcinol
- sedatives – panthenol, allantoin, aloe vera, bisabolol
